Development Works - Social Enterprise in Afghanistan

'Social Enterprise' is often described as business for a community purpose. Beyond profit, success can be measured by community and environmental benefit.
'Sustainable Development' delivers social and economic activities that satisfies todays needs without making things worse for future generations.
'Aid' or 'Development' Aid is short term humanitarian relief. Development primarily seeks to reduce poverty by improving economic and social structures.
'Humanitarian Aid' save lives, alleviates suffering and promotes human dignity. Activities are short term and urgent, often in response to war or natural emergencies.
War and drought have crippled Kandahar and devastated the agricultural economy. Most farmers are caught in grinding poverty, which in turn causes great stress on rural communities.

This project, commissioned by CIDA, is energizing dozens of small rural communities with fast-track, intense and progressive development. Since last summer, the project:

  • has benefited over 60,000 Kandahari
  • transformed 2,500 ha of desert to farmland
  • significantly reduced
  • built 50km of irrigation canals
  • built or building markets, pharmacies, bakeries and metal shops
  • repaired schools & clinics
  • providing access to tractors and other agricultural machinery
  • engaged, 2,000 impoverished villagers in short-term work

Agency trainers are presently upgrading the sewing skills of 120 women to help establish a garment & textile industry in Kandahar.

Above all, we work with communities.
